Friday’s Michigan Supreme Court Ruling

(Last Updated On: October 4, 2020)

Buck Families,

On Friday the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that Governor Whitmer lacked the authority to extend or declare states of emergency in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.  We are seeking further guidance from local, regional, and state authorities. BCS will continue to implement all Executive Orders that have been released to date, this includes the order that will start Monday October 5, 2020.

For now, Buchanan Community Schools will continue to operate under the Board approved Return to School Plan that we have successfully implemented these past four weeks.  This plan is based upon guidance from the CDC and the Berrien County Health Department.

The released data from the health department shows Berrien County is continuing to see a relatively flat trend in the number of cases since mid-August.  The new case rate is 6 cases per 100,000 residents, and the percentage of positive COVID tests being under 3%.  There have been very few positive cases in school students or staff.  Of persons being excluded from schools, the majority have had close contact to a person outside of school.

We appreciate your continued support and understanding as we work through these uncertain times and implement established practices and guidelines that are keeping our students and staff safe and healthy.
