CALL TO ORDER President: Sandy Tobler opened the meeting at 5:06 pm
ROLL CALL PHYSICALLY PRESENT: C. Lee, R. Writer, D. Wentworth, J. DeVlaminck, K. Laesch, and S. Tobler.

 

ABSENT:   H. Burnett (arrived later by phone)

ADOPTION OF AGENDA

 

MOTION by K. Laesch, SECONDED BY Member R. Writer the agenda for the Special Board Meeting of August 11, 2020 be adopted as written.

RECOGNITION OF VISITORS None
SUPERINTENDENT/ DEPARTMENT REPORTS Superintendent Robinson spoke of the BEA Letter of Agreement regarding middle school teaching planning time to be voted on at the next meeting.
COMMUNITY DIALOGUE CITIZENS CONCERNS Brandy Babcock – Ms. Babcock wanted to register her concern with the board regarding Mr. Kurland stating during the town hall meeting that it wouldn’t be a good idea for upper level Buchanan teachers to be teaching in person and virtual students at the same time. Mrs. Robinson addressed the concern.

 

Mattie Book – Mrs. Tobler read Ms. Brooks comment regarding how going virtual would affect children’s IEP. She was questioning if children not able to wear a mask would be treated differently during in-person instruction. Ms. Books also noted a short deadline to inform the school of Buchanan family’s choices for back to school learning. Mrs. Robinson addressed her concern.

NEOLA FIRST READING MOTION by D. Wentworth, SECONDED BY Member R. Writer, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the first reading of the following NEOLA – Special Update – Title IX Regulations; new and deleted policies:

VIRTUAL COURSES MOTION by R. Writer, SECONDED BY Member D. Wentworth, The Buchanan Board of Education authorizes eligible traditional seated courses to be delivered as virtual courses, or a combination thereof, for the 2020-21 school year following the guidelines provided by the Michigan Department of Education Pupil Accounting Manual.

PRESENTATION – BUCHANAN REOPENING ROADMAP

 

Buchanan Community Schools’ Executive Director of Academic Services, Mr. Mark Kurland, along with Moccasin Principal, Dr. Michael Dunn, presented to the board Buchanan’s reopening plan. They discussed the requirement of facemasks, riding the bus, the use of face shields, guests and visitors not being allowed entry past the office unless extenuating circumstances, teachers spacing students out as much as possible, screening of students to be performed before school by parents at home, health department guidelines, attendance policies, food service, no indoor assemblies, no trips to indoor places, school events over 50 people being cancelled, athletics, cleaning, transportation, instruction, remote learning for K-4, and Buchanan Virtual Academy for grades 5-12.

QUESTIONS & COMMENTS FROM BOARD MEMBERS Mrs. Writer thanked Mr. Dunn, Mr. Kurland and Mrs. Robinson for their long hours and hard work that had been put into this plan.

 

Mrs. Robinson also thanked everyone who has participated in putting this plan together.

 

Mrs. Laesch asked about submitting the plans to BRESA.
