DEPARTMENT REPORTS

–          Buck Staff Appreciation September winner: Sondra Staggs   Mr. Donahue recognized Mrs. Staggs as this month’s winner; she was one of several staff members who volunteered to present to the district staff on SchoolNet during our back-to-school PD days. Mrs. Staggs received a certificate and a gift to show our appreciation for her extra efforts to the district.

–          Mr. Donahue informed the Board of the Legislative Breakfast at BRESA on October 7th. Please contact Michelle Munyon and she will register board members for the event on October 7th.

 

–          Mr. Donahue updated the Board that Mark Dubias from MASB would like begin our process for Strategic Planning with time with the Board at the October 2019 meeting. Part of the beginning work involves describing our vision for the District; the process will also involve a full day retreat in January of 2020.

 

 

COMMUNITY DIALOGUE CITIZENS CONCERNS –          Valerie & Shannon Bryans: Stated they were upset that the bus driver informed their children today that they would not be able to drop them off at their house and would have to be picked up/dropped off at the corner, ¼ mile away.

Motion By K. Laesch, Seconded By J. DeVlaminck, The Board of Education approves the proposed Crossing Guard Agreements as agreed between the Buchanan Community Schools and City of Buchanan; effective for the 2019-2020 school year.

ADOPTION OF ATHLETIC STUDENT HANDBOOK UPDATE

 

 

Motion By K. Laesch, Seconded By S. Tobler, The Buchanan Board of Education adopts the Buchanan Community Schools Athletic handbook update for the 2019-2020 school year as presented.

CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) – RECOMMENDED MICHIGAN MERIT CURRICULUM CREDIT 2019-2020

 

 

 

 

 

Motion By J. DeVlaminck, Seconded By S. Tobler, The Board of Education approves the recommendation as submitted by CTE/BVA Director Mark Frey, to accept the recommended Michigan Merit Curriculum Credits for the listed CTE programs for 2019-2020.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE: EXPULSION HEARING – STUDENT #533510

 

 

 

 

Motion By J. DeVlaminck, Seconded By R. Writer, The Board of Education adopts the following resolution:

 

WHEREAS, the administration has presented to the Board of Education, a recommendation concerning the expulsion of a student who was in violation of Buchanan School Board Policy #5530 on Monday, September 9th, 2019; and

 

WHEREAS, the administration has notified the student and parent(s) involved of the accusations against the student, the recommendation of expulsion, and their rights to a hearing on this date; and

 

WHEREAS, this is the same policy violation as a previous expulsion for which the student was recently reinstated.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:

 

The Buchanan Board of Education hereby chooses to expel student #533510 permanently from attending Buchanan Community Schools effective immediately.

RATIFICATION OF AGREEMENT WITH BAAMA (BUCHANAN ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS & MEDIA ASSISTANTS)

 

 

 

Motion By J. DeVlaminck, Seconded By C. Lee, The Board of Education approves the agreement between BAAMA and Buchanan Community Schools for a 2-year agreement (2019-2020 and 2020-2021) as recommended by Tricia Lowery, Executive Director of Business and Operations.

NAYS:  None     MOTION  ADOPTED

 

QUESTIONS & COMMENTS FROM BOARD MEMBERS K. Laesch welcomed everyone back to school and loved hearing of the Staff Recognition. She also commented about Moccasin Elementary School’s adorable announcements video.
