2026-27 NOTICE – Best Practices for Firearm Safe Storage

Effective October 1, 2025, Michigan Public Act 258 of 2024 requires every public and private school to annually inform parents and legal guardians about secure firearm storage practices. Each year, schools must distribute the Michigan Department of Education’s (MDE) Safe Storage Notice, by mail or electronically to every parent or legal guardian of each enrolled student. The notice includes a summary of Michigan’s secure firearm storage law, answers to common questions about secure firearm storage, and information on where to obtain free or low-cost gun locks and safes.

Additionally, schools must post a link to the official Michigan Department of Education webpage, where the notice is available in English, Spanish, Arabic, and other languages. Schools and their employees have legal immunity from civil liability for sending or posting this notice.

This Safe Storage Notice is intended to inform parents and legal guardians about the legal requirements for securely storing firearms, answer frequently asked questions related to the law, and provide resources related to secure firearm storage. Secure firearm storage helps prevent unauthorized access by children, reduces the risk of unintentional shootings, reduces the risk of fatal self-harm, and improves school safety.
