Superintendent, Dr. Andrea van der Laan provided Athletic Report outlining a four year history of Buchanan Varsity Baseball and changes and accomplishments of Athletic Director, Mr. Lonnie Hoover since 2015 to date.

MHSAA RESOLUTION – 2017-18

 

MOTION BY Member J. DeVlaminck, SECONDED BY Member S. Tobler, The Buchanan Board of Education dopt the following resolution:

 

The Buchanan Middle and High Schools which are under the direction of this Board of Education in the School District of Buchanan, City of Buchanan, County of Berrien, State of Michigan, are hereby:

 

(A) enrolled as members of the Michigan High School Athletic Association, Inc., a nonprofit association, and

(B) are further enrolled to participate in the approved interschool athletic activities as sponsored by said association.

 

The Board of Education/Governing Body hereby delegates to the Superintendent of his/her designee(s) the responsibility for the supervision and control of said activities, and hereby accepts the Constitution and By-Laws of said association and adopts as its own the rules, regulations and interpretation (as minimum standards), as published in the current HANDBOOK as the governing code under which the said school(s) shall conduct its program of interscholastic athletics and agrees to primary enforcement of said rules, regulations, interpretations and qualifications.  In addition, it is hereby agreed that schools which host or participate in the association’s meets and tournaments shall follow and enforce all tournament policies, procedures and schedules.

 

This authorization shall be effective from August 1, 2017 and shall remain effective until July 31, 2018, during which the authorization may not be revoked.

Writer, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the recommendation as submitted by Superintendent, Dr. Andrea van der Laan, for Mrs. Stacey Denison to be approved as Moccasin Elementary Principal for the 2017-18 school year.  ROLL CALL VOTE:  K. BHS SOCIAL STUDIES INSTRUCTOR RECOMMENDATION

 

MOTION BY Member S. Tobler, SECONDED BY Member R. Writer, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the recommendation as submitted by Buchanan High School Principal, Mrs. Stacey DeMaio, to board Mr.  Erik Johansen as Social Studies Instructor for the 2017-18 school year.  Mr. Johansen will be compensated at step 8 salary level of the teaching agreement.

PERCUSSION INSTRUCTOR

 

MOTION BY Member J. DeVlaminck, SECONDED BY Member S. Tobler, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the recommendation as submitted by Buchanan High School Principal, Mrs. Stacey DeMaio and Band Instructor, Mr. Mark Hollandsworth, to board Mr. Michael Stutsman as percussion Instructor.  Mr. Stutsman will be hired up to approximately 103 hours per year, with multiple commitments outside of the regular school day, including but not limited to concerts, public performances, and a summer marching band camp.  Mr. Stutsman will be paid a $2000.00 stipend for his service.

SET 2017-18 BUDGET PUBLIC HEARING DATE MOTION BY Member J. DeVlaminck, SECONDED BY Member S. Tobler, The Buchanan Board of Education adopt the following resolution:

 

WHEREAS:

 

The Uniform Budget Act requires the 2017-18 Budget be adopted prior to

July 1, 2017.

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

 

The public hearing for the 2017-18 Budget will be held at 5:30 p.m. on June 19, 2017 at Buchanan Middle School.

L-4029, RESOLUTION TO LEVY TAXES MOTION BY Member S. Tobler, SECONDED BY Member K. Laesch, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the attached tax rates as authorized for levy on the 2017 tax roll per the 2017 tax rate request for L-4029.

HIGH SCHOOL PAVING PROJECT MOTION BY Member J. DeVlaminck, SECONDED BY Member K. Laesch, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the proposal of asphalt maintenance at the Buchanan High School using: Affordable Asphalt located in Buchanan, Michigan, in the amount of $335,200; with an additional $11,300 for an alternate section in the staff lot and with the expected completion date to be before August 15th, 2017.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE BOARD DECISION – EXPULSION – STUDENT #516929

 

MOTION BY Member H. Burnett, SECONDED BY Member S. Tobler, The Buchanan Board of Education adopt the following resolution:

WHEREAS, the administration has presented to the Board of Education, a recommendation concerning the expulsion of a student who was in violation of Buchanan School Board Policy #5610.01 on May 24, 2017; and

WHEREAS, the administration has notified the student and parent(s) involved of the accusations against the student, the recommendation of expulsion, and their rights to a hearing on this date;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:

The Buchanan Board of Education hereby expels student #516929 from attendance in the Buchanan Community Schools effective immediately for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year and school year 2017-18 with the following conditions:

1)        2017-2018 school year, the student must complete 11th grade year while attending Buchanan Virtual Academy or another alternative setting.

2)        The student must attend six sessions of counseling with an outside the school district professional (responsibility of parent/guardian) and obtain a release to report back to school from the counselor prior to re-admittance meeting with the Superintendent of the Buchanan Community Schools.

3)        Upon the completion of the first two steps, the student and parents/guardians must contact the Superintendent of Buchanan Community Schools to schedule a re-admittance meeting back into Buchanan Community Schools.

4)        Any recommendation will be reviewed by the Buchanan School Board before a decision to re-instate the student will be made.
