CALL TO ORDER  

President Harvey Burnett opened the meeting at 6:02 pm

SUPERINTENDENT /DEPARTMENT REPORTS –          Superintendent Donahue, Principal Falkenstein, Principal Denison, and Board Members honored our 2017-18 retirees:  Dianne Ross – 32 years; Cheryl Holloway – 19 years; Mary Ward – 33 years; Susan Borr – 24 years

–          Close Up presentation provided by students: Megan Adkerson, Sierra Abrahamson, Kirsten Vite, Jillian Demler, Maya Schuhknecht and Mr. Josh Wegener.

–          Superintendent Donahue provided updates regarding custodial RFPs, bus leases, and a request for a personnel committee meeting.

BUCHANAN HIGH SCHOOL 2018 GRADUATION CERTIFICATION

 

MOTION by R. Writer, SECONDED by D. Wentworth, Upon satisfactory completion of District requirements for High School Graduation, The Board of Education Hereby approves the graduates as listed on the attached roster to be certified for graduation; and further authorizes the administration to prepare diplomas to be presented at the 2018 commencement ceremony.

SCHOOLS OF CHOICE RESOLUTION MOTION BY Member J. DeVlaminck, SECONDED BY Member R. Writer, The Buchanan Community Schools’ Board of Education, exercising the option permitted by section 105 of the State School Aid Act of 1979, as amended by Public Act 300 of 1996, will accept applications of nonresident students who reside within Berrien RESA boundaries for the available grade level openings as listed below for enrollment into Buchanan Community Schools for the 2018-19 school year and will operate a Schools of Choice program in our district in compliance with the statutory requirements of section 105.  The window for applications for these opening will be July 9, 2018 to August 7, 2018.  Available opening for each grade level:

Kindergarten: 15 1st Grade: 11 2nd Grade: 6 3rd Grade: 3
4th Grade: 16 5th Grade: 0 6th Grade: 0 7th Grade: 0
8th GRADE: 25 9th Grade: 5 10th Grade: 15 11th Grade: 25
12th GRADE: 5 BVA: unlimited

BERRIEN COUNTY INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DISTRICT GENERAL FUND & SPECIAL EDUCATION OPERATING BUDGET RESOLUTION MOTION BY Member C. Lee, SECONDED BY Member R. Writer, The Buchanan Board of Education adopt the following resolution:

 

WHEREAS:

 

This Board received the Berrien RESA General Fund Operating Budget following the RESA Board meeting of April 9, 2018; and

 

WHEREAS:

 

In accordance with Section 380.624 of the Revised School Code, this Board must now adopt a resolution expressing its support or disapproval of the proposed Berrien RESA budget, and must submit to the Berrien RESA Board any specific objections and/proposed changes the Board may have to the budget prior to June 1, 2018.

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

 

The Berrien RESA General Fund Operating Budget for the 2018-2019 school year be supported, and that the Secretary of the Board is hereby directed to submit a copy of this Resolution to the Secretary of the Berrien RESA Board of Education, along with any specific objections or proposed changes to the budget

EARLY MIDDLE COLLEGE RESOLUTION MOTION BY Member J. DeVlaminck, SECONDED BY Member D. Wentworth, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the board resolution in support of the Berrien County 5th Year Early Middle College:

 

WHEREAS, the Berrien Regional Education Service Agency (Berrien RESA) provides services to the local public school districts in Berrien County, including post-secondary opportunities;

 

WHEREAS, the Buchanan Community Schools Board of Education is committed to developing new, innovative approaches to teaching and learning in our existing and future schools;

 

WHEREAS, the Buchanan Community Schools Board of Education endorses the 5TH Year Early/Middle College Model for Berrien County as a partnership between Lake Michigan College, Southwestern Michigan College, Berrien RESA and the local school districts with the potential for expansion of additional postsecondary partners.

 

The Berrien County 5th Year Early/Middle College Model consist of:

 

·          An early college opportunity “without walls” for Berrien County students which extends into a 5th year of high school,

·          Early College application approved by the Michigan Department of Education,

·          The application process that begins in their 10th grade year of high school for admittance to the program the following school year,

·          Programming options at the local high schools, Lake Michigan College (Napier and Bertrand) campuses, as well as Southwestern Michigan College (Niles and Dowagiac) campuses,

·          The option of attaining an Industry specific Certification, Michigan Early Middle College Association Certificate (MEMCA) or an Associate’s Degree,

·          Attainment of High School diploma at the completion of the program.

 

WHEREAS, the Buchanan Community Schools Board of Education endorses the Berrien County 5th Year Early/Middle College Model for the students in Berrien County.

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education endorses the Berrien County 5th Year Early/Middle College through the completion of the 2018-2019 Cohort’s program of study (i.e. 2021) and the board endorses the program as a best practice for eligible students within Berrien County.

CONTRACTUAL AGREEMENT EXTENSION FOR THE POSITION OF BUCHANAN COMMUNITY SCHOOLS’ SUPERINTENDENT  

MOTION BY Member K. Laesch, SECONDED BY Member C. Lee, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the Superintendent contractual agreement extension for the position of Buchanan Community Schools’ Superintendent; as defined in the contract between Buchanan Community Schools’ Board of Education and Mr. Timothy J. Donahue.  Terms of contract are to continue July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2021.

MOTION BY Member K. Laesch, SECONDED BY Member C. Lee, The Buchanan Board of Education tables the resolution for Board member protocol:  No Surprises, as recommended by MASB.

DRESS CODE POLICY 2ND READING & ADOPTION

 

MOTION BY Member J. DeVlaminck, SECONDED BY Member R. Writer, The Buchanan Board of Education adopts the District’s Dress Code Policy as outlined in the attached policy drafted by the Dress Code Committee and submitted by Superintendent Timothy J. Donahue.  Policy is to be implemented and take effect for the 2018-19 school year.
